Can not receive or send offline message

Post by angex »

I'm having this problem for about 1 month.
I can't receive offline message from certain contacts when I'm offline, and they can't receive my message when they're offline.
But for most of my contacts there's no problem.
(I have tried version 1.4.3.b1, 1.4.2, 1.3.8, 1.3.9)

And I notice there are some occasionally message drops recently.
It's freaking me out! help!

I've looked at the "known bug" linked resource and see it relates to Pidgin rather than LibPurple. Perhaps someone could clarify this. Whatever the case I'd appreciate guidance as to how to overcome this issue until the bug's fixed - e.g. by running an earlier version of Adium - though the OP's attempts to do so didn't manage this. For what it's worth I was running 1.4.2 and went back to 1.4.1 but to no avail.

Libpurple is mostly developed by Pidgin developers.

I don't know of a workaround, I'm afraid.

I would have thought that if LibPurple is a library it's stored in the package which references it - hence older versions of Adium should contain the version of LibPurple which doesn't contain the bug - though as an ex-programmer of an ancient database I can't say I understand how it all hangs together.

No, you might be right in that the bug isn't be in older versions of Adium. In fact, the version history (http://trac.adium.im/wiki/AdiumVersionHistory) will tell which version of libpurple has been used in which version of Adium.

However, I'm a bit skeptical about older releases since they likely have other issues.

Tried to resolve by rolling back to older version - 1.3.5 being the oldest which I could find would run under 10.5.8 on a PPC box - but to no avail. (I deleted the "Adium 2.0" folder in /Library/Application Support before running each version.) I've added a post with a debug log extract to the relevant known bug in Pidgin.

Has anyone found a fix for this yet? I'm one of those people who ignores Adium updates for as long as humanly possible, but purely by accident I clicked 'update' and found myself with 1.4.3, and (as a continuous problem with every other Adium version I've used) the inability to receive offline messages. If I sign in through a client on my phone, or through the normal AIM program, the messages come through fine. But Adium has never allowed me to receive offline messages and it's recently become sort of especially-desirable for me to do so, for my lackluster digital social-life.

So, any ideas, anyone?

The Pidgin bug report (see my last message) has not been addressed yet and is causing angst amongst others. It's interesting to see that you've always been unable to receive (nor, presumably, send) offline messages. I had the impression it broke only recently but my tests (again see my last message) suggested not only that it had been a long-term problem but also that the Pidgin bug is therefor not new. I only need to communicate with Windows Live Messenger Service users and given how important offline messaging is I've switched to using Microsoft Messenger for Mac. I know there are multi-client alternatives such as those detailed here but it does all that I need. I'd rather use Adium and will return to it when this issue is fixed. Then again I might not if this poor level of high-importance bug-fixing is anything to go by - even if it is by the Pidgin rather than the Adium team.

This was fixed in Pidgin release 2.10.2 (details) but the latest release of Adium 1.5 (details) which came out the day after uses 2.10.0. Let's hope the next release incorporates it.
