messages keep auto scrolling down to last sent

Reading long messages is impossible in my adium unless I tell the person to stop talking because every time I scroll up to read what they have previously written, it auto goes to whatever they have just sent instead of leaving the window where i am scrolling it myself. I have looked through all preferences and there is nothing to stop the auto-scroll to the most recent message. Help anyone?
