Strange attempts to connect to RFC1918 addresses

Somewhat alarmingly, Little Snitch has recently alerted me to attempts by Adium (whilst connected to both MSN and AIM) to initiate TCP connections to unreachable RFC1918 addresses, even when there are no active conversations.
Does anyone have any idea why Adium would be attempting something so daft? Do MSN and/or AIM involve peer-to-peer connectivity, without filtering obviously unreachable peers?
