Don't get me wrong, you all are doing fan-damn-tastic work with Adium, but Facebook chat is at best inconsistent. I've used Adium for years now. I don't do video chat, so it's nice to have all the various chat clients under one roof so to speak.

That said, beginning a couple months ago, Facebook chat no longer worked—not using the ''official'' set-up method offered with Adium or by using the Jabber work-around. It doesn't work on my older Mac with version 1.4.4 either.

Yesterday, magically it worked on 1.5b8 on my MacBook Pro. I even tested it by signing off, signing on, quitting and re-starting Adium. It worked perfectly.

Today it doesn't. Back to the perpetual sign-on loop

It is so frustrating to have to keep the Facebook web page open to chat. Most inconvenient since there is no knowing if somebody's chatting with you unless you switch to the web page and look. I'm surprised Facebook doesn't even realize how inconvenient this is. Some of us don't use smart phones.

Is there any hope of Adium ever working again with Facebook or will it be a constant issue? I ask this so that I know whether or not to even try anymore.

You know, you're right. This has been partly Adium's fault as it has been slow to adapt to changes made by Facebook. On the other hand, Facebook Chat has been a very unreliable service itself.

What's that, "the perpetual sign-on loop"? Is this common knowledge? I am not familiar with that description.

I knew it had to be a combination of this. I can understand the inconsistency better knowing that the intrepid Adium developer community is having to play catch-up with ''Failbook'' constantly tinkering and changing things. I don't know what it is with them. They are constantly fixing things that don't need fixing and not fixing things that do need it.[/quote]

I wish I was you. It is so inconvenient to have to have the Failbook web page open—but on the positive side—I am spending less time being drawn into chat with people who feel compelled to talk to me. I have a good excuse with Adium and Failbook not talking to each other. I guess I should count my blessings?

After I go through the set-up of Failbook on Adium, it goes through a looping ''re-connecting'' thing, never connecting though. Don't know if that clears that up.

For what it's worth Facebook is timing out for me as well, both using the "official" Oauth method as well as via jabber, and I also just noticed it not working yesterday.

The sad thing is that pretty much everybody I know has moved to "Failbook" chat and now I have no need for the other IM client capability...which of course has rendered both my iChat and Adium useless. I guess there's Skype...?
