Problem with AIM usernames containing periods (dots)

Problem: Adium doesn't allow sign-in with AIM username containing periods (dots). AIM express (http://www.aim.com/products/express/) *does* allow login.

Setup:
Adium 1.4.4
OSX 10.7.2

My AIM username contains periods (say, black.beard.arrr). AIM express (http://www.aim.com/products/express/) allows me to login just fine.

Adium reports:
"Error: Unable to sign on as black.beard.arrr because the username is invalid. Usernames must be a valid email address, or start with a letter and contain only letters, numbers and spaces, or contain only numbers."

This can't be true, as AIM express allows me to login with an AIM username containing periods (dots).

iChat 6.0.1 also has no issues with this username.
