Multiple Adium Installations on one mac

Post by BLCoyote »

Hi

Is it possible to have multiple installations of Adium on a mac. Same user account but with different settings?

In this scenario I would like to have one adium instance running with my regular messengers, and a different instance of adium running only a single Jabber account (the jabber account is very large with 1000's of users, and I don't really want those contacts tangled up with my facebook/msn contacts).

Hi BLCoyote,

1. From my point of view, the easiest solution would be to disable "Connect when Adium opens" for all your accounts except Jabber. Then, you simply do "connect all accounts" (cmd-shift-r) when you need the other ones. You can put your Jabber contacts in a list, which you can easily hide with the "little triangle" next to the list name in your contact list when you'd like to use all accounts together.

2. If you really would like to have multiple Adium instances, I can't found out a good way. Maybe you could make a copy of your Adium preferences and use an Applescript which toggles between a "only Jabber account" and a "other accounts" preference file. I did something like that once, but that was a bit tiresome. Then, do you need the two instances to run at the same time? You can do that by launching one from the Terminal, and maybe you could use some option to use a different preference file for the second instance, but I don't know if that's possible.

If the problem is your contacts being tangled up, the first way should be enough, I think ;-). But I'm not an expert!

(Edit: grammar, because English isn't my mother tongue  )

Holding the "alt" key at startup you can set up multiple profiles.

Great! Like the Firefox Profile Manager, but much more convenient. I'm using Adium since years and I didn't knew that  very helpful.
(I'm coming from the french forum, which is under maintenance. It's interesting to discover other threads.)
