Okay, I feel kind of stupid for asking this, but I can't find the answer anywhere. I'm using Adium as a facebook chat client, and currently it notifies me on the desktop when any of my friends connect. With several hundred friends however, that means I'm notified pretty much every second. I don't want to turn off notifications entirely as there are some people who I want to be notified for... but how do I customize this?

I hesitated to answer because I'm not a specialist, but I would use the preference pane to disable notifications for all contacts and individual preferences for the contacts you'd like to get a notification for:
– customize the notifications for all contacts in Preferences > the “Events” tab : change or remove the “Contacts signs on” notification in the list. (In my Adium, when someone connects, she/he only gets green in the contact list, without other notifications.)
– individually choose for which contacts you'd like to get a notification when they connect: in your contact list, right-click on a contact, do “get info” and customize the “contact signs on” event.
As I was teenager, I made a script to become a SMS when my best friends connects... but that was years ago, and now the website where I could send free SMS uses Captchas ;-)
