I keep getting Growl like notifications in the top left corner of my screen when people sign in. I don't even have Growl installed, and can't find a setting in the preferences.

Am I missing something very obvious?

Yes. indeed. There already are a couple of very recent threads about Growl notifications (which they are) here.
