Giant Adium Duck/Icon appears in most new chat windows

The duck: shown to scale

It's pretty invasive. (It's actually a giant icon, it just shows up as a duck for people without a personal icon)
Adium version 1.5.2
Mac OSX 10.7.3
I have gone through settings a couple of times and have no idea what triggers this or why.
It only appears in some chats. I perpetually have a tab open with my wife, since I chat with her regularly. There is no duck there.
However, when I start chats with a new person, it seems to always appear. The service doesn't seem to matter (at least with AOL or Yahoo!).
I suspect there's a connection to the fact it doesn't show up on my wife's chat window, but other than length of time, I'm not sure what. I've quit and restarted Adium, bringing back existing chat windows. I've put the computer to sleep. I've disconnected and reconnected my external monitor. These are the only things I do that I would think could alter or effect Adium's display.
As for the common fix in trouble shooting, I don't have any existing Adium preferences. My library application and preference folders are devoid of references to Adium. And a finder search turns up nothing except for the program file.
How do I get rid of the giant duck?
