I have been using Adium since around 2004...

I am currently using 10.6.8, and my Adium is updated as well... I have noticed this problem for awhile now..

I would have Adium open, but I might be using Mail or Safari or whatever.. Before, when one of my friends would log into their IM, Adium would chirp and a small bubble would appear temporarily showing the status, "Mike has logged in" or "Jen has logged out". A few seconds after notifying me of the status change, the bubble would fade away..

At some point, (and I cant put my finger on exactly when, but at some point), the bubble quit appearing, and all that remains to alert me is the chirp, but I have no convenient or immediate way to see who just logged in or out. This is a feature that I would like to restore.

There has to be a way to correct this in some setting somewhere, but I cannot find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What you are referring to is Growl, an external application that creates the bobbles. Either go to Adium Preferences --> Events, and add a Growl notification to whatever you want, or go to System Preferences, and check that Growl is active (Should be at the bottom of the window).

David, I can "hear" a growl or chirp, but there is no 'bubble' to appear giving me a visual of who it was..

I would like to reactivate that visual feature.. what would that be called?

That is what I just explained. Growl is a name, not a sound in this case.

that was very helpful, I think I have solved it...
now that the blurb is showing again, it is hanging on the screen for too long of a period...

where can I go to tweak this and shorten the time that the growl stays on my screen?

(To clear up the terminology: the bubbles you are seeing are called "notifications" and they are from a system called "Growl". OS X 10.8 has its own notification system supplied by an app called "Notification Center", Adium will add support for it in the next version.)

actually, its not going away at all... i feel like we are close!

now, if we could just get it to dissolve away quickly, we would be golden!

ok, i am back, and here is the issue now....

when someone logs in and out, the box shows up in the upper right hand corner, but it never leaves...
when someone messages me, the box hangs for a second, then fades away...

i need the log ins and outs to fade away too..

i know it shouldnt be this hard... thoughts?
