As I understand it, the developers of OTR built the entire backend for the encryption system, making it (relatively) easy for the Adium developers to implement encryption. Audio and video chat, on the other hand, will depend on the gaim-vv project, which is nowhere close to being done.

In other words, we have encryption because it was ready for prime-time, and we don't have audio and video chat because they weren't.

I'll admit I'm still confused about the "skin" - since none of the default extras changed in this release, are you talking about the interface of the application?

A/V hand-off

Since AV chat support is very hard, a tricky, but perhaps less hard workaround: it would be neat if Adium (or gaim underneath) could detect/broadcast AV capability for Yahoo and/or AIM/iChat and when such a chat is actually requested, shut off the connection in Adium (after user confirmation since all ongoing conversations would naturally stop in Adium), launch the Yahoo or iChat client as appropriate, and start the AV communication in that client (controllable via Applescripting maybe?).

That might be really hard, but maybe not as hard as AV within Adium and maybe a better match to a developer wanting to scratch an itch?

Just wanted to throw the idea out there.

Seems a bit much to close all of your active chats to enable video or audio to a single person.

Rook, someone mentioned a similar thing before, and it was eventually decided that it would be kinda confusing.

Of coure, prior to Tiger you could have iChat and Adium signed in, but now iChat doesn't play nice...

Certainly it's not the best. But it may be better than the status quo when what everyone really wants is simply not available at all.

However, the penalty of switching chat clients does depend how often you entertain multiple chats. For some of us I'd guess, that's infrequent enough that the penalty is very much worth paying. For others, I'm sure simultaneous conversations are always in motion and the penalty would feel severe. I'm sure there's a full spectrum here and everyone would have to decide for him or herself if it were worth it.

Yes, I've no doubt it's would be technically challenging and probably confusing too. But as I mentioned, the question I see is, is it better than the status quo? Especially given that what everyone wants is very much not on any horizon.

That all said, I'm not in any position to help implement any solution at this time. I just wanted to bring up the idea in case it matched what some developer thought might be worth considering. Thanks to all the devs for Adium X.
