Fail to connect to Mac OS X Messages server (XMPP)

I've been trying to connect to a Mac OS X Messages server with no success - keep getting:

Error: Unable to establish a connection with the server: Operation timed out

This after it sits on "Initializing Stream (25%)" for a couple of seconds. Nothing in the Console log so I'm pretty lost. It works fine from Messages to the server so I know it works. Searches here turns up way too many matches with all the keywords I can think of to pare down the responses.
