I set to use Growl everytime my friend send me message but it never appears!!!
what's wrong with my Adium?

oh ya, what's the difference between "Message Received" and "Message Received (background)"??

An event set to "message received" will happen every time you receive a message. An event set to "message received (background)" will happen every time you receive a message while Adium is in the background. As for the Growl notifications not appearing, check the growl pref pane in System Preferences and make sure that 1) Adium is enabled and 2) the notification you want is enabled for Adium.

So, what about "message received, initial"? I assume that means the first message a contact sends you in a given chat, right? I tried to set my events to have a growl notification only for "message received, initial" - but I can't seem to do that without also having a growl notification for "message received (background chat)" which is an option I don't want.

Is what I am trying to do impossible?
