WLM down on Adium? and several other third-party messengers

Postby shydra » Wed Nov 12, 2014 4:34 pm

Adium v. 1.5.10
MacBook Pro with Yosemite 10.10

Problem: I can't log on to WLM messenger for the last twelve hours. It gets to the 100% sending cookie stage, and my security settings at live.com register a successful logon, but it hangs at 100% connecting sending cookie and never loads a buddy list or actually shows me as being online when I checked from other clients.

_______

Several different third party messengers have been having trouble with WLM today. I know the word was that it's dead, Jim, but according to this site it's an applicationID issue:
http://messengergeek.wordpress.com/2014 ... mporarily/
"The problem seems to stem from a change on Microsoft’s end about which application IDs are allowed to retrieve contact lists. The ID used in the above clients is the applicationId (CFE80F9D-180F-4399-82AB-413F33A1FA11) from Windows Live Messenger 2008 (8.5). When the client attempts to get the contact list, the server will reply with: Invalid Application Header Application ID is either not defined in database or blocked from access."

They also give a python-based application patcher, but I am not good with things programming-related.

Trillian also issued a fix: http://help.trillian.im/discussions/win ... is-morning.

Adium will pick up the change in libpurple to fix the issue: https://hg.pidgin.im/pidgin/main/rev/f6a91e6c77a4 / https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/16451

Thanks for the reply!:)

So... I take it I have to wait for the next full Adium update? Is this apt to happen anytime soon? If not, is there anything I could do in the meantime to temporarily fix it, or should I just sit tight and wait for the proper update?

Cool beans.
I was running into this error. Glad to see that a solution path is already determined.
Thanks to Robby and the other developers for making Adium available and keeping it up to date.

i'm so glad that this issue has been identified =)

Derik "solution path is already determined".
Does this mean that Adium is working on a solution or has a solution already been provided? Sorry, I tried reading the post on "Adium stuck at sending cookies 100%" that also provided a mac fix but I wasn't able to understand or execute the python fix.

Many thanks

I've looked at that website and the fix but I have no idea how to implement it, I'm a new mac user so I'm still getting to grips with everything. If possible, could someone walk through a really step-by-step basis on how to do it?

This is the fix I am trying to do http://messengergeek.wordpress.com/2014 ... ment-18920

I've applied the fix and can now sign in, but my friends show as offline even when they're not. Has anyone else run into that? Everything was working correctly until this server change.

Your observation matches this comment from the Pidgin ticket I linked above.

Ahh thanks. I'd looked at the new ID and the Python patcher, but missed the actual ticket. It's behaving itself today so I'll just use it while I can :)

Will there be an update for this issue?

I have no idea how to apply this patch.

Maybe i just need to change to Skype permanently...

I plan to bail on the patch and wait patiently for the Adium guys to solve this. As it turns out, along with the changes that Microsoft made to cause this problem, they also broke all the Chinese MSN clients too. My counterparts are trying to decide on a new protocol. Perhaps someone on this forum could make a recommendation. We just need basic chat, we do file transfer by email and video is useless. I would prefer a protocol that allows me to continue to use Adium. Also it would help if the protocol supported clients suitable for PCs running Chinese Windows. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Would ICQ be good for that? I tried the Skype app. But that feels like swatting flies with a cannon balls -- too much power, not enough control. We just want something simple. SMS for the computer.

We generally recommend using XMPP (commonly known as "Jabber"). Here’s some information on it:

Robby, so reading between your lines I get the feeling a solution for MSN accounts could drag out a long time and/or may not be solved at all? What is the status on your side? :[

Developers need to make time. The MSN issue is top priority.

MSN might be a dead issue. I'm seeing "connection refused" now on that account.

Microsoft is trying to <sarcasm>gently nudge </sarcasm> people from its free service (MSN) to Lync or Skype. They have also announced that Lync is destined retired or integrated into "Skype for Business".

I do not know if Microsoft will make it possible for 3rd party clients to use the Skype messaging protocol. I think that Microsoft expects to monetize Skype. Allowing third party access the servers and the protocol would likely be contrary to that goal. But who knows.
