Adium <-> Hipchat interop thread

I find myself working with HipChat these days. Seems like we need a thread about the state of the art for interoperate with Adium.

First off the Hipchat client does not appear to have OTR support, so your chats are accessible to them and those who they take instructions from (courts, employeers, etc.) Presumably if your correspondent is using a real jabber client with OTR support you could route around that.

The folks that run hipchat have a help page: https://help.hipchat.com/knowledgebase/articles/64436-how-to-connect-using-adium. The account setup instructions there worked fine for me. Presumably you can't register new jabber accounts that way; but I didn't try.

Your jabber handle with them looks like: 12345_987654@chat.hipchat.com

When joining a room, ignore their instructions. Just use Adium's "Discovery Browser" which is a submenu of the account, either in the File->12345_987654@chat.hipchat.com->Discovery Menu, or in the preferences off the accounts listing.

Once you join a room the first time, you'll probably want to: a) book mark it, b) change the name, c) decide if you want it to autoopen. That work is quite tedious. I was unable to puzzle out how to craft a xmpp:... url to reach these rooms.

I was unable to puzzle out how to get images into my hipchat messages. Images pasted into the hipchat client appear in adium as clickable links, at least for me. I can paste images into adium, but the hipchat server or client declines resulting the file upload.

This Message Style for Adium does help - https://github.com/schisamo/hipchat-adium-message-style - It isn't available via xtras.adium.im so installing it is a bit more tedious.

If you do search for hipchat at xtras.adium.im then you'll find the emoticons that the hipchat folks piled onto their jabber setup.

Hit the limit on URLs/msg in that first post:

Searching xtras for hipchat addons: http://xtras.adium.im/index.php?a=search&s=hipchat

Where to get your hipchat jabber account handle: https://tervela.hipchat.com/account/xmpp

Setting up all the rooms makes it difficult to get people to switch to Adium.

That I can't get image pasting to work is probably a show stopper for me. We paste a lot of screen shots of UI and log file fragments.

Hipchat also has this silly feature that let's a user edit his most recent IM by doing "s/recent/reasonably recent/", the correspondent(s) client side then revises things. Nice for quick fixes for typos.

I'm curious why when I use HipChat/Adium and Hipchat/iPhone, Adium pops up TONS of these annoying windows:

http://picpaste.com/Screen_Shot_2015-04-01_at_1.34.04_PM-PjZ5ejbR.png

When I get in to the office in the morning, I literally have to click through scores of these to clear them.

Can someone please explain why this is necessary?

The number 1 reason to use Adium for HipChat is that you can't run multiple HipChat clients on the same machine without considerable messing about.

These tips are useful. How about we put them on a wiki?

That sounds like a good idea. If anyone wants to write up these tips on a dedicated page on Adium’s Wiki, send me a personal message and I’ll set you up.

We already have service-specific information on XMPP, IRC and Twitter in our documentation: https://adium.im/help/pgs/AdiumDocumentation.html.

bhyde, forrie, mrjcleaver, what's the situation here? Does Adium work okay with HipChat these days?
