Adium logon to Google Talk.

Post by AndiJF »

With AIM closing down in December, I'm looking at alternatives. One of the people I need to talk to is not very technical, and we have not had much luck with Jabber, so I'm looking at Google Talk which I know they use, but I'd rather connect to it using Adium.

Unfortunately, Google Talk won't let me log on unless I turn on their global "Allow less secure apps" switch, which I'd prefer not to do. Can anyone suggest how I should proceed? I've read references to "application-specific passwords" but they all seem to apply to two-factor authentification.
I have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is. I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.

Here's the link to generate your Adium specific login password.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work for me. Your link leads to an error page where I get the message "The setting you are looking for is not available for your account."

After installing the latest El Capitan security update, Adium is asking me for a password and not accepting either my Google password nor an app-specific password. It's not giving me that pop up I used to sometimes get that asks me to get paste in a code from Google granting Adium access.

Any idea what happened? Did the security update break something?

For the record, my daughter reports she is also having problems with Adium and Google - she says it shows her as being offline when she's not.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't found a solution to this. I'm just going to Google and setting on the "Allow less secure apps" switch at the beginning of an Adium session, and turning it off at the end.
