Group chats have text that is greyed out

I'm using Adium to connect to some Cisco Jabber Boards -- not my choice unfortunately.

I can subscribe and see "boards" which I assume are group chats. This works and I can see the messages but the text is annoyingly greyed out. I've tried tweaking all settings that I can find but I can't figure out why the text is not standard black on white.

Does Adium maybe think I'm not a member of these groups? Is there a setting I can change to convince it otherwise or to ignore the fact?

Have you tried a different message style?

I did try all of the built in ones and could see no difference.

I think message styles display old messages differently. Do new messages that come in look the same as in your screenshot?

Yes. These are all new messages.

What does it look like if you use the "Smooth Operator" style?

Message text still looks grey.
