Perhaps we can have 2 sets of nibs, one for LTR languages and another for RTL, and then select which one to use based on the language. What do you think, Evan?

That sounds like a good idea, ofri. Although it would still be a pretty big change in the code.
by the way, regarding what I said about hebrew version of panther and jaguar: I was in Yeda's offices in Rosh Ha-ain, and I saw on their computers that all the system menus are in Hebrew. I don't know what version of OS X they used, but I saw it for a fact, so perhaps they're not just talking bullshit. Maybe not for jaguar, but for panther it might be true.
I truly hope for some serious RTL support in leopard. And fully Hebrew localized version as well.
By the way, I have a silly question: how hard would it be to implement switching between left-to-right and right-to-left in Adium using the CTRL+SHIFT keys, like it currently works in Windows? I always found this shortcut to be very simple and intuitive, but you can't assign a hotkey in OS X just for CTRL+SHIFT. It's also very nice to be able to type with the SHIFT key pressed in order to type a few letters in English inside hebrew text. For example, if I want to type "OS X" in a right-to-left hebrew text, I don't have to switch languages, I just keep the shift key pressed and type in English. Once I leave the shift key, i'm back to Hebrew.
I know these options are not possible through system preferences, but maybe they can be implemented in Adium's code itself?

Not sure if this is the right place, but you can switch text direction with opt + cmd + r. I have Hebrew mapped to cmd + ctrl + space so two sets of hot keys and you are good.
