"message too large" with AdiumX 0.80 and AIM Group

Post by dglidden »

If I try to type or paste a message into a AIM group chat over about 200 characters, I get the message, "Could not send the last message because it was too large."

I can send the same message to an individual chat over AIM, or Jabber, or to a Jabber chat room with no problems.

Adium 0.7 did/does not have this issue except with much larger messages, and then it was consistent across the service, regardless of individual or group chat.

Could you give an example message which sends in 0.77 but is "too large" in 0.80?
The duck still burns.

I'm not sure that that's true. I noticed that Adium .7 looked like it sent larger messages in a group chat, but nobody would actually get them (generally noticeable when the large message in question was a question and no one would answer, at which point I'd ask and they'd confirm that it never got through).

Frankly, I find it frustrating that Adium doesn't tell you the message was too large. I haven't tried it yet in Adium .8, but I'm guessing it may not have changed.

Hmmm, I guess that's possible. I'm in AIM chat rooms infrequently enough that I've never thought to confirm that larger messages were getting through. This paragraph, for example, is "too large" by 0.8 standards, but under 0.7 I would not get that error.

The cutoff point is 220 characters. But if what Maeve is saying is accurate, it may be that nothing larger than that has ever gone through, and I just never noticed, although I _would_ get the "too large" message once in a while, but it was with considerably more text than currently. (For example, pasting a chunk from the JDK docs or something.) Currently I've even been bit trying to paste a URL or two.

^ that URL won't even go through in an AIM chatroom using 0.8. Kind of frustrating. heh.

I'm guessing that it's getting surrounded with <a href> tags, which effectively more than doubles the size of a link when pasted into an AIM chatroom. But yeah, I pretty much can't paste any link that's more than a few dozen characters total into an AIM chatroom.

From fooling around with GAIM and Trillian, it looks like this is either a libgaim issue, or strictly related to AIM chatrooms in particular that they restrict the size of messages to about 232 characters total. (Probably 255 when you include some control info with each IM message.)
