I came to this forum for the first time today, specifically for this problem. I love Adium, but this is really obnoxious!

Every time I restart Adium, my contacts go back to another group. I've tried deleting the groups... I've also tried deleting all the adium preference files and reinstalling, all to no avail.

A workaround: It seems to work appropriately if you delete the contact, then add them back through the menu, making sure that the correct group is selected when you're adding the contact again.

I haven't tested it thoroughly, but it's working so far. :)

Solution founded!!

The problem comes directly from the MSN server.
Check on the original Microsoft MSM Messenger for Mac ( if you don't have it downloaded and install it first) that your contact are on the right groups and that are not present in more than one group. If there is any group you dont want delete it after deleting or moving all the contacts in the group to the appropriate one.
Once every contact is on the right group sign out and quit the messenger.
Start Adium and you will see all the warning coming out regarding the contacts you moved or deleted on on the main MSM asking you if you want to add them back on the SERVER, press NO to each one of them and now you can reorganize your buddy list as you like even if most likely will be already fixed reflecting exactly the buddy list you have on the main MSN and server.
LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAD ANY PROBLEMS BUT I THINK I'VE NAILED IT!!

Well, it is likely having to do with the way Adium interfaces with the servers. It's not MSN alone though, as the grouping problems were with a few of my AIM contacts as well.

Deleting and re-adding the contacts in Adium itself has solved the problem for me.

sorry but i still believe that is all have to do with the server you set the contacts on in the first place that's why it worked as the contact list on Adium reflect exactly the contact list on the main server of your contacts plus any changes you may add from Adium itself.
You probably had everything correctly set on the contact list on the AIM server and made the Adium list set differently, that's why making those changes directly from Adium solved your problem, if your list on AIM had a few of the same contacts on different groups you could have keep erasing the ones from Adium as much as you like but once quitting the program or log off the next time you reopened the list would have messed up again. Personally for AIM I only use Ichat and use Adium for everything else(MSN,Yahoo etc...).
Peace.

On a side note:

djbsquared was warning you regarding the etiquette of the forums. I'm now locking this thread before it becomes more annoying.
