One thing: this won't work in anything other than Normal Window (look at teh status pulldown; it's only in normal window)

I think the best way of doing it would be to be able to add yourself to your contact list and when you click on yourself, be able to change all your info from there.

This feature request is definitely something I'd like to see for MSN and other protocols.

Kevlar, Microsoft makes huge financial losses with MSN. they care about keeping clients to their operating system, not directly $$.

Ludge, that's a weird way of doing things? if you add yourself, and change the name of the contact (that is yourself) the info should be sent to yourself (do you still follow? I don't)

I'm in the process of making an applescript that allows you to change the name of every account, and one to change the icon of every account.
I'm almost there...
Sadly it's exam times so everything takes more time.

This way you'll write
/nickname{twopeak i have a very annoying and stupid useless long name just to piss everyone off because they have to expand their window to see what I wrote}
and poooom there you have your name (though there might be some protocols that put restrictions on the name!)

or write
/icon
and ppooooom there you have a window to select what file you want as user icon.

So keep an eye out for a script called "extrAdium"

a) First of all, Adium is filled of those minor details which make us love this wonderful app.
b) Adding yourself to your contact list is a *bad* idea.
c) I think having a submenu in the Status menu allowing to personalize your name the same way you do with your status could be nice. And a shortcut to do it fast maybe.

First of all any implementation of this should not effect current users. This may be an important thing for a lot of users so it's good to discus ways of implementing it. My suggestion would have been to add it to the account actions sub-menu. That's the menu that was moved to the file menu in .81 called change nickname. This would be the logical location for this.

Than I saw towpeaks post. An script where you type it. Brilliant, I don't think the developers need to do anything, let's just wait for twopeaks script.

Just to know... that would require opening a chat window even if you don't want to talk to anyone and type the command, right?

I completely agree with the creator of this thread. I change my nickname 10 times and hate doing it on adium. Moreover, adium bugs all the time for me, i always get 'unknown mistake' in my convos then have to restart the computer... it's just terrible.

I think the problem hasn´t really been clarified here, or perhaps this is my own little problem ? :)

Ok, on msn you´ll get Nickname(away) but with the advent of Messenger Plus (atleast it was news to me) you can now use the away msgs with whatever one likes, just like adiumx has with its awaymsgs, but on the msn network they won´t show up.

So instead of Nickname(Myowncustommsg) it will just say Nickname(Away) no matter what I set my away status too, is there any way to get a fix for this?

This is not the same as changing the nickname/profile/contact name, aleast I don´t think it is.

Thanks in advance :)

Seems to me that this is really a problem with the MSN protocol... Changing your nickname to indicate your status? That sucks!

What about an option for MSN users to have away messages change their nickname instead? You could have a default nickname that is always shown, then the away message would be tacked onto that. So if my default nickname was "thejokell" and I wanted to change my status to "working," it would change my nickname to "thejokell - working." Maybe it could just be a check box in the status window - "Change nickname to indicate status" or something like that?

Well, sometimes the nickname has the same function as an away message like "Nickname - [Away]", but sometimes it hasn't.

For example, you could have "Nickname - [Drunk from last nite]" or "Nickname - [Arm brocken]", or whatever. This is NOT an away message, just a short way to let people know about your mood or have them talk to you.

b) we appreciate you letting people know about our little app here, but stating that you have switched x number of people, or something along those lines does not change the way we look at your request. first and foremost adium is something people code on because they really like it.
c) if soemthing is truly useful for the usablility of adium, and is worth it to work on, then it may come along, but these are all minor things, and while broken things are being fixed or features being worked on, this is relatively minor.
First of all i find this reply very childish.

if you really are someone who works on this program then i do have recpect for what you do, but why not have some respect for people who post what they think is a useful request in the "Requests" forums

No where did i have the attitude that i got 5 people on this program so do something for me. flat, out, ignorance!

relatively minor???

I'm starting to think that the people bashing this request arnt bashing
it cuz they think its not a good idea, but because their complex they have with Microsoft is -Relatively MAJOR-

Personalizing your nickname often to reflect your mood or what your up to is something LOTS of people do and LOTS of people find usefull.

I'm a sound artist for a video game company in vancouver. ive meet a lot of crazy people who are ONLY nintendo supporters, or ONLY sony supporters. like saying a touch screen on the DS is just stupid, when really it adds something new to gaming. this way of thinking is very closed minded and that stunts growth.

I love my mac but i think some people go a bit too far with this anti microsoft thing[/u][/b]

I really like this idea, you can make custom available statuses too so it would still work in chouchou's scenario. Although it might be simpler to set a shortcut key for changing your display name.

i agree with you thumper, it takes way too many steps to change your nick. Couldn't we get a shortcut key to type in your nickname or even to type in an applescript, so we can use twopeak's applescript more easily?

The problem with that is the way Adium handles accounts. You can't put a hot key for something that is account specific. What about people with multiple accounts. Good idea, but I don't it will work. Again, add it to the actions menu.

Anyway you add it, it needs to not interrupt or be intrusive to those of us who don't need it. Their have been a few good solutions. I can't believe that twopeaks script is not a good enough solution.

Thumper, we get the idea. Stop being so aggressive on this.
