How can 0.77 had Growl without installing it first?

in 0.80 and 0.81 we must install growl if we want to use it, but how can 0.77 had Growl without installing it first?
does GROWL do anything changing my system files etc etc? I'm just fraud it will mess up my system

It won't mess anything up, don't worry about installing it.
As for your first question, .77 and previous versions had a built in bezel event system. Growl could have been used instead, but if I'm not mistaken it still had to be installed.
