My gripes with Adium

lax thought I should state my gripes with Adium, so here it is.

1) Combining messages should be a user option, not a message style option. I understand some of them don't work well both ways, but that is not Adium's fault, it is the developer of the style's fault. Sadly, now users are stuck with either taking it in the arse and living with a screwed up message style or opening a package and editing a plist.

2) Message window position isn't remembered anymore. Adium .77 handled this fine, so I don't really know what the problem was. Now, everytime you open one, Adium cascades it off of where the previous window was.

3) Adium .77 handled reformatting messages correctly, too. If a friend selected -Bold Times New Roman 24pt purple text yellow background- Adium .77 turned it into the default of -Regular Lucida Grande 12pt black text white background-. Adium .81 does most of this, except for the bold tag. It's a fugly eyesore. Don't know why that was changed either.

4) There is no way to always show the Status window. If Adium .8 goes into the background, the Status window hides. Why? Adium .77 handled this normally... Adium .81 does not.

I'm happy you guys put in the ability to go invisible, block people, direct connections, a file transfer window, etc... But did we have to lose other valuable features too?

1) if you have a problem with the msg style combining messages and you know how to edit the plist, then do so. i would rather have all my msg styles combine the msgs, rather than be like ichat.

2) my adium v0.81 seems to always have chat windows appear where i had it last. whats wrong with that?

3) i see messages fine. i haven't seen anyone using bold, though this could be a settings thing...

4) i remember adium v0.77 also hid the status window. nothing changed here.

people going invisible is very annoying. anyway i can block an invisible user from msging me, without blocking them completely?

1) It is not the user's job to edit a file to allow this option. I'm very happy you like it the way it is, but that's not the point sweetheart.

2) Doesn't for me. I started out with a clean plist and support folder. Did you?

3) Perhaps you would like me to turn on Bold and IM you to show my point.

4) No, it didn't hide the status window. You obviously don't have a very good memory. (Or the hiding was an option...)

you could always ask for msg style makers to make a version without combined msgs, but if the msg style maker doesn't want to make their msg style have that option, thats up to them.

Just some images to show what I mean. Sadly, I'll be moving back to Adium .77. It's a shame too :(

The bold thing was removed because when someone wants to emphasize a point they should be allowed to. Stripping this formatting actually changes the meaning of the IM, and that should not be allowed. I'm not sure if it would be possible to detect a whole string using bold, and disable formatting only for constant message formatting.

Combine consecutive IMs was a very hard thing to implement from a message view standpoint. Its hard to design a message view that looked good with the same CSS in both consecutive and non-consecutive messages.

My message window remembers its position perfectly.

The status window is not finished. Please note that every single one of your requests have been made multiple times, and it would do you go to search for your topics before you make a post :) Also, the Adium team frowns down on comments like "this has made me revert to a previous version" or "guess I'll try proteus" or other threat-like sentences.

Above all else, I wanted to tell you why these changes were made, because there is a high amount of reason and logic behind it. No one took away your features just to spite you :)

would it be possible to make a possible advanced option to reformat incoming messages, so they aren't bold or italic?

that way people who always msg using them don't get the person they are msging annoyed.

I assume so, but I'm not a dev, just a long-time friend and fan :)
