its unuseable, its very laggy and slow in all its features, options etc. Here are my specs

Machine Model: PowerBook G4 12"
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.33 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.8.3f1

does not slow down my entire comp, just the program runs very slowly.

heres the sample from the activity monitor

That sample doesn't show much activity at all.

Have you tried the troubleshooting steps outlined at the top of this forum?

I'm getting this as well.

I tried rebooting, deleting font caches, deleting Adium caches, starting with fresh Adium preferences (I did everything mentioned in the Troubleshooting sticky post).

The behaviour is odd - everything is slow, but it does not hog CPU. In fact, I can't even see Adium in top for more than a second with 15% CPU usage. It's most annoying when typing a message, it's like typing on an old Sonyericsson phone - first type, then wait for the letters to start to appear :) This behaviour is reproducible in all Adium windows with text fields. Also, all graphics are laggy too (just not that annoying).

Is there any way to trace it? Some debug to turn on, profiling?

hmm, so you even had this behavior with a completely fresh system user? I can't think of a tool that would really help track it down, but I have a few questions that might help.

- Is the lag related to accounts being online? Say, does Adium lag typing in a custom away message right after being opened if nothing is signed on?

- Is the lag related to message views at all? Does Adium lag if no message windows have been opened and the preference window hasn't been opened?

- Does check for updates in the Adium menu work?

Just fixed it...

I fixed it, but I'm not sure HOW... I deleted all the system font caches and rebooted (i haven't rebooted after removing them before, just restarted Adium).

And now it's fast as usual!

Anyway - it still is an issue because it only affected Adium and can return anytime in the future.

Lag is not related to accounts - i had a fresh user, no accounts, went to Status editing (the only textbox that was handy) and the letters were still lagging behind greatly.

No, it is not limited to message textbox, it occurs anywhere within Adium.

Yes, check for updates worked without problem (that was the first thing I tried).

Some info:
Mac OS X 10.4
I use Desktop Manager (0.5.3), Sticky windows.
I also use Speech recognition (not active all the time but On) if it matters.
It first occured after I installed a VLC nightly build and played a movie, first I thought it was draining CPU power but it remained the same.

If or when it happens again - what should I do to make a more useful report? (I can only think of a ktrace at the moment?)

oh man, what has .81 done . . .

.8 was working just wonderfully about 10 minutes ago. i downloaded .81, and all of a sudden it's going crazy. the contact list was slooooow (and didn't format correctly at first), and i kept getting disconnected. so, i downgraded back to .8, in hopes that the problem would correct itself. but no. i'm still getting disconnected every few minutes, contact's away messages aren't showing up in the tooltips, and the list loads realllyyyyyy slow.

i have no idea how to clear a cache as was mentioned above . . . any help would be much appreciated.

<< I also use Speech recognition (not active all the time but On) if it matters. >>

since i was having no luck with anything else, i thought i'd turn off speakable items to see what would happen, since for whatever reason zviratko mentioned it in his post. turns out this was the exact cause of the problem i also experienced in adium (cpu would jump to 100%, typing text would get super laggy, same as the above mentioned complaints).

i should mention that i had no problems running .8 until tonight, when i ran the latest version of cocktail on my system and rebooted. after that, the adium issue was noticeable right away. i upgraded to .81, hoping it would solve the problem, but it did not. i have no idea how cleaning caches, repairing permissions, and whatever else cocktail does to optimize the system could affect adium in this way, but whatever it did, it appears to have developed a conflict when speakable items is turned on (i always have this on, so i would've never guessed to turn it off if it weren't for zviratko mentioning that he too had his speakable items on).
