funky /me behavior

this has existed in adium as far back as i can remember, just got annoyed enough to report it.

/me - the old standby should be replaced with the username / nick or not at all, but adium replaces it with an *

so if i type: /me = stupid hipster

expected would be: *jameskitty = stupid hipster or
*jameskitty13 = stupid hipster or even
/me = stupid hipster

actual result is: * = stupid hipster

i can reproduce it on yahoo, msn and aim so im assuming its client specific.

Adium 0.81 / OS 10.3.9 / g4 ibook / 800 mhz / 1.125 gb RAM / 2.75 GB Free on HD

annoyed me just now when a contact thought i was insulting them, instead of self-deprecating. i searched /me but found nothing in the forums so i thought i would report it.

thanks!

/me behaviour is deliberate. It was briefly changed to *Andy smacks you in the face with a large halibut* but reverted to *smacks you in the face with a large halibut* because the general opinion was that the new behaviour was worse. Why?

1. Seeing

Code: Select all

Andy: *Andy smacks you in the face with a large halibut*
looks incredibly dumb, because it doesn't make much sense.

Code: Select all

Andy: *smacks you in the face with a large halibut*
is marginally better.

2. It looks even worse with long MSN display names. Two lines of text, including random information about how that person is feeling and doing at that particular moment, followed by a couple of words of action, was wasteful and difficult to read.

3. The *.....* method is actually used by some people anyway, so it kinda makes sense to go for that.

Sorry that you don't like it - but we had one long debate about this already, so I don't really think anyone wants to go through it all again. :)

As it happens, I agree with the original poster, but we've had this debate and it's been settled.
