font settings - color, background, type... im having trouble

ok so for some reason i cant get my font to change from WHITE.

i choose a different color, but it doesnt change! :/

same goes for background.

To change your background or foreground colors:

Open a new message window. Open the font selector (Format -> Show Fonts, or Command-T). Select the font color and background color you want - the "T" icon with the color patch sets your text color, the "Document" icon with the color patch sets your background color. Send a message.

To change your foreground color only:

The same as above, but use "Show Colors" instead of "Show Fonts."

I cant seem to change the background

Background is only available on 10.3 and higher, I believe.

that would explain it..wow so i guess i will have to update soon
