Help With File Transfers

I was wondering if you could just make a sticky with troubleshooting ideas for file sharing with Adium using an AOL account. Also if you could include information about which ports to forward and which configurations are most likely to work.
I know everyone is different but a generalized explanation for the less technologically savvy people would be a great starting point. Also, a small discussion on whether on not there are PC to Mac problems or if there are problems with certain version of AIM connecting to other versions of Adium. Or if file sharing was only meant to work from one Adium client to the other.
I recently had Adium crash on me when trying to send one mp3 file to a buddy with both his firewall and mine turned off. But two seconds before that, I successfully did the same thing to another PC AIM 5.5 user, though he had "auto accept" checked on. Does that make a difference? It seems if Adium sits too long without getting a response it crashes or hangs during the file transfer process.
If you found you have answered these questions millions of time before, then that is the perfect reason to make a sticky thread. Also, that would be the most helpful thing to do considering file sharing has been put on the back burner as of late for reasons that I am fully aware of.
I don't mind waiting for this feature to appear in Adium, but having to search endless threads full people with no patience blab on about how they want file sharing if just annoying and tiresome. I would love to see a clear and concise sticky covering the major issues of the file sharing problem without being bogged down with everyone's two cents.
