But it would only work on the "high-end" systems. I know people who are sitting on very slow computers, which doesn't have the capability to use core image at it's max..

But I wonder, would it be able to auto-disable it, like it does with the widgets system?
Not really a great reason not to seek to eventually implement it. In a year or so, a ton of people will have core image, and from my fairly limited knowledge I don't think it's a massive undertaking to implement (nor is the auto-disable).

Wow!

How the heck did you do that? How soon can we see that feature in Growl? I love it!
Hopefully .8. It's something proton came up with, and jkp is hopefully adding it to svn tonight.
Hang on a sec. We're lampooning the use of the ripple effect for Adium, but we love it for Growl? How does that work?

You gotta admit that with Growl it is pretty cool. But it’s useless for Adium; how many times are you going to make the contact list appear out of thin air? NONE.

it seams pretty useless for contact list especialy when sliding takes over but for chat windows it could work

Where are you getting these numbers? AFAIK, we have no statistics about Panther/Tiger user adoption rates for Adium (Thanks Cachefly!).

Why is everyone talking up these effects anyways. That effect takes a long time. It kind of woks for widgets, but it still is annoying to have to wait for. Now the pop effect would be nice for growl, but this is the wrong forum for that. What people don't understand is these effects serve a purpose. Every effect in os x is not only cool, but gives the users clues as to what is happening (like the genie effect showing you where the window is going when you minimize). Apps should be the same. Ease of use is important. Things like the contact list smoothly expanding and contracting when people sign on and off, and even smooth scrolling (for those styles that have it) help show the user what is going on. If you rely want an effect when you open a new message window, make it so when you double-click on a person in the contact list the message window will genie out of that contact. Personally I think that's a bad idea, but that would make a lot more sense than the ripple effect.

Obviously his numbers are probably wrong, but I think what he means is that you have to have not only tiger, but a good enough graphics card. Although that's anyone who had bought their computer since tiger came out so that's a lot of people. Hum. Maybe I just like to hear myself talk.

i made up these numbers 7 months ago so even if those numbers were right back then they couldnt be used today for comparison

except if you bought a mac mini(they still dont ship with a card good enough for core image) and maybe not some emacs

There's that whole pesky installed base that has anything from a Powerbook G3 to dual-G5s, so there's a wide range in which hardware does _not_ support Tiger's CoreImage/Video effects.

wunderwood is 100% spot on with his reasoning on when & why to use effects in OS X.

now, there's no reason not to use CoreImage as an optimization tool, especially if drawing is identified a bottleneck. But adding new little frills is really a waste of developer time, and adds more code that needs to be maintained.

That said, if you want to submit a patch for this, it will be reviewed.

Ya, the way we're doing that core image ripple in growl is with high priority notifications really.

And yes, it should be available with bezel simac

Hold on a minute, we seem to have veered back onto discussion of ripple effects - like I said before, pointless eyecandy for use in the contact list. However what I was wondering about was functions like blur, which do serve a purpose as they help distinguish the contact list from the background.

It seems to me this is exactly the kind of use for which Core Image was created - plus I've been led to believe that Core Image functionality is not too hard to implement and fails gracefully on unsupported hardware (but then I'm no developer).

Besides, I've always found the Adium team to be exemplary cocoa developers and this is the kind of thing that would keep you guys ahead of the proverbial pack. [/buttkissing]

You still need to maintain it, for further use in development. And as others have said, it's a waste of time. Aka not a priority, wouldn't you rather like them to be able to work on Audio/Video or other features.
And when that's done, go back to the awesome features that Mac OS X can give us.

I'd rather see them working on features that will see the light of day.
