how do a get the wee message alert box to come back. in 77 it came up in the bottom of me screen to show what was happening such as a new message or contact online, how do a get that on the new version??

That's now done with Growl. The event option you want is to "Display a Growl notification".

you'll have to install Growl if you dont already have it installed

Adium installs growl automatically as needed...
