If you hit command-y, the Custom Status dialog appears. There you can check "Appear idle immediately" and then you can enter the number of hours and minutes you want to be set idle

so, now there is no way for us to go idle without being away? I liked the way it used to be...

Pro tip: Setting a custom Available status with a custom idle time fakes idle without going away. You can also leave the available message blank.

can i just ask how exactly do u use the idle status? there's a check box for 'appear idle immediately', then there's a place to set the time?.. wat is the time for? a label beside the time selectors would be nice.

The time is the time that you appear to have been idle for, when you select the status.

so.. for msn it's useless?.. what do i set it to then? because on msn whenever i select a purely idle status i become idle then immediately become active again (i have myself in my contact list), even though i'm still 'idle' according to the status menu... is this a bug? or am i using the status incorrectly

It's a bug, I get it too. On Yahoo as well on the whole, actually. I'll make a trac ticket for it.
