Why doe Bonjour have a User Name and an Alias?

If you have an alias set, you show up as your alias; otherwise, you show up with your user name. So if you want to change how you appear, can't you just change the user name? Isn't having an alias redundant/confusing? Or is there some functionality here that I'm missing?

One is for how you want to appear to others, one is for how you want to appear to yourself. Very, very different.

You're not supposed to be able to see yourself in your Bonjour list (current bugs aside).

But you can see yourself in messages you send.
