Can't direct connect using Adium

I really prefer Adium over iChat, but behind a router I can't seem to direct connect to my friends using AIM. Is there anyway to fix this? Same with file transfer. Wondering if I need to open any ports etc

(File transfer is very similar to direct connect, so the majority of that applies to both)
