buddy list in menu bar pulldown?
buddy list in menu bar pulldown?
I searched the forums and didn't immediately see any messages about this, but is there a way to have your buddy list in the menu bar pulldown? I let Adium manage my status automagically so all those options are useless to me, but having my buddy list there would be immensly helpful. Are there plans to add this feature?

it was on the first page.
Anyways, no plans, and probably never will be.
There was another thread about this, which had much more informative responses and discussion, but it seems to have mysteriously disappeared...

saw that one
I did see that one, but I didn't realise he was talking about the same thing. Seems the Aduim developers are against this feature for some reason? Is there a discussion about the reasoning somewhere? I'm trying to think of any down side and coming up blank. It wouldn't have to be on by default. I love everything else about Aduim (so far), but this one missing feature is driving me nutty. I'd love to learn why I don't really need it. What obviously better method of usage am I overlooking?
huh
I've got like... 7. I guess I'm just an unpopular geek. :) Maybe you could have a special group that populates the menu pulldown. Just put in the people you talk to frequently. You could also have group submenus so you can have a secondary pulldown for work, friends, family... etc. Only the groups would show up in main pulldown. This would all be optional of course. I think that would still be easier than having to click on the dock icon to bring up a full fledged buddy window, as nice as the Adium buddy window is.
There really is very little reason for this.
It is likely to get too big too fast, it doesn't add any additional purpose. Clicking the dock icon once and double clicking a name is only one click more than the menu would be, and the buddy list window is designed for that task. The menu bar is not. Submenus are almost always a bad solution to a problem. Development time would be taken away from hundreds of other important things to implement this.
That enough reasoning?

respectfully disagree
I'm just going to have to disagree with you here. Having the list in a pulldown menu is a greatly improved user experience. I would say especially so when the list gets large and is catagorized into sub-lists. Clicking on the dock at the bottom, then moving to the buddy window and expanding/minimizing groups, then locating and double clicking the correct name is way too many steps. With a pulldown you click and hold, sweep down to the group and then the name and let go. done. The menu is attached directly below the menu bar so it's right there under the cursor immediately. The groups auto-expand if you hover over them for 1/2 a second.
As a software engineer, I have some interest in the subject of human interface design, and as a former iChat and Fire user, I know from first hand experience how much nicer it is than the current Adium method. Adium is far superior in all other areas like asthetics, ease of configuration and use, customizability, and protocal support (over iChat). I'd hate to loose all that for want of this single feature that I happen to find invaluable. A list of items belongs in a menu, not a window. It would be easy enough to have it turned off by default for people who insist on doing things the hard way. ;)
Other threads on the subject getting locked and deleted I would guess is an indication that this feature is being asked for so much to the point that it's annoying the developers... (I could be wrong here). So I'd like to add my voice to the chorus

Threads being locked and deleted is an indication that posters are posting non-constructively, off-topic in existing threads, or duplicate threads.voisine wrote:Other threads on the subject getting locked and deleted I would guess is an indication that this feature is being asked for so much to the point that it's annoying the developers... Please remember that the forum is not for requests. It's cool to discuss requests here, but if you want to request a feature make sure to do so through trac.adiumx.com . Anything here will be gone in a week as it slides off the bottom of the page, and posts to these forums on the merit of a feature by users or developers are not necessarily the viewpoint of the project.
