because i grew up looking at a clock that said AM/PM, plus my house has convenient holes covered by glass on the sides of it which allow 'sunlight' to come threw.Boramor wrote:I see a lot of wrong in that logic.
Why would you go trough all the 'trouble' too look outside if you can easily use a 24 hour clock?
but ok... if you get kidnapped and stuck in a basement or something, then ill admit that there is an important need for a 24 hour system.. but at the current time, id rather see the metric system invade america..
on that note.. theres a whole lot of argument about how America is ignorant because the youth cant speak more than one language, no 24 hour clocks, no metric system.. blah blah blah.. while those arguments are all valid.. id rather be called ignorant for much more important reasons.. say.. maybe invading a nation without UN support or something..ratifying the 'no child left behind' deal.. (the list goes on).. i know i live in a basakwards country... the 24 hour system isnt a big deal.. start complaining about our stupid leader...
thank you
Edit: im being 100% sarcastic mostly, ive even set my computer's main clock to the 24-hour system to see what all the hub bub is about
though I despise the 12 hour system, I think our world would be boring if everyone used the same...
I see alot of good things about using 24 hours system, because I use it.
This sentence is a big wink to page 2 or 3 of the unified look discussion in the beta forum: people dislike too much change, and they like what they have (well, this is relative, but in this context it's kindoff like that)
The Asians should use a 6 hours system, just so we have 3 system in the world...

The problem with 12-hour time isn't not knowing what time it is at any given moment, as that's usually obvious (unless you work night shifts or are really tired, you'll know whether it's 8 AM or 8 PM). The problem is with referring to other times. Sometimes people say "there's gonna be a cool TV show tomorrow at 9" or "the ice cream truck always drives by at 8"; you can assume based on context whether it's AM or PM, but sometimes it's hard to know for sure.

yea, but then the following question comes ' is it AM or PM'.. i just dont see it being that big of deal.. i would switch to 24 hour system but everyone else uses the 12 hour system, and it would be more confusing to have to convert back and forth than to just tack an AM/PM on the end of every 12-hour time..FredAkbar wrote:The problem with 12-hour time isn't not knowing what time it is at any given moment, as that's usually obvious (unless you work night shifts or are really tired, you'll know whether it's 8 AM or 8 PM). last time i checked, when big ben says its '3 oclock' and the sun is shining... nobody is confused..
Yeah, same thing with the metric system and the Celsius temperature scale; it would be way easier to live with those, but I know that when you switch from one to the other, you just end up converting stuff back and forth, especially when the country you live in stays with the other system.

well, i use the 24 hour clock, and when i copy/paste things to friends and it has the time in it, they don't ask what the numbers are. and the only time anyone might have a problem with it is if they're using my computer--but then i'd be nearby and i could just tell them. it's not that tough. just annoying when i don't pay attention and say 8:00 instead of saying 18:00. it gets me all the time...

well i mean, i agree wholeheartedly, im just kinda passionate about this.. for some odd reason..FredAkbar wrote:Yeah, same thing with the metric system and the Celsius temperature scale
to the normal person there is no differnce between 25 C and 77 F.. really because, there is no difference, its the same temperature. 8 PM and 20:00 are the same things, same time. 2 miles is 3.21 kilometers, same distance.. you get my point.. my logic stands at that. at the moment im working on my chem degree, i have to deal with units every day.. my thinking isnt flawed because i believe that its ok to look outside to decipher whether it is AM or PM, and it dosnt make me any less intelligent or less sensible.. its just another way of doing things.. i agree the metric system is superior to the english system, but i disagree that someone should be looked down upon for using a 12-hour system over a 24-hour system.. its just crazy in my opinion.
fred, i honestly dont think it would be any easier to live with the metric system than the english system, i know alot of people think it would be too. perhaps it would be easier for the scientific community, and it would be easier to find out how many centimeters are in 24 kilometers..america hasnt changed because it dosnt matter, it would cost to much money for to little of a differnce.. everyone that needs to use the metric system uses it, i dont know of any other chemist that still uses english units.
on another note, i forget what space probe it was.. but i think it was one of the first ones to land on mars.. anyway, it crashed because someone put the landing quadrants in the english system.. when the probe was programed in metric
I work at a radio station, so it's important that I have the easy differentiation. I didn't mean to call anyone ignorant for using the twelve hour system – I just find the logic of looking out the window to be ludicrous. It was for that reason that the girl I mentioned thought I was an idiot for using the twenty-four hour system!
