how do you message someone not on your buddylist?

this seems like a feature that would come with any messaging client that goes without saying but for some reason i find it impossible to do with adium. (messaging someone not on buddylist, offline, or invisible)

how do i do this? if its not possible, wow... i really hope its in the next one.

command + N, and then type in the person's screen name.
