New Message notifications are distracting...

Quite often a message comes in which I read without activating Adium, either via Growl or because I can see the chat window in the background. I don't need to reply, so I carry on with what I'm doing.

But then the message notifications start to taunt me - the big red 'IM' stamp in the dock, and the new message icon next to the contact that messaged me. And so I feel compelled to activate the Adium chat window just to remove the new message notifications...

Does anyone else suffer from this, or is it just me?
I could disable the new message notifications, but they can be handy, particularly if a message comes in while I'm away from my machine. Is there a way to set up a global hotkey that would clear them? Quicksilver trigger, anything? Any other suggestions?

Sounds dumb, I know, but it's my only remaining niggle with Adium. (well, that and the dumb duck icon :P )

Blasphemy!

Anyway, what you COULD do is remove the new message notifications like you said, and instead have a Growl notification combined with a sound for new messages. That way, you can read the message when Adium isn't in front without the constant dock icon and contact list notification, and you can tell when you get a new message if you're not looking at you computer because of the sound.

I like the Duck, I think it's cute. :P

Specially when it flaps it's wings. :D
