Hi guys, I've got a problem which has only recently started appearing on Adium, the cpu on my G4 iBook is being eaten by Adium, and it's really hard to type with the letters lagging in the time they take to appear on the screen. I have 10.3.7 and 512mb ram. The cpu use is close to 60%. Adium is taking close to 600mb in VRAM too.. surely this is a bit high? o.O

Ignore the VRAM usage, that's nearly impossible to interpret correctly (read the RSIZE or "Real Memory" instead). However, the CPU Usage is odd. Does this happen all the time? After any particular action? Has this happened with previous versions, and what version are you using?

It's happenning all the time, i've got about 2-6 tab windows open, and nothing major happenning.. i may have xchat aqua or safari open.. and it's on version 0.7.2


additional: infact, it seems to be doing it moreso when i am waiting to reply to messages, and it's flashing at me to check the window...

Yea, i'm having the same problem. I have an iMac DV 2000. So its a G3 processor, 400 mhz. Maxed out ram. It eats my cpu. I had a problem with the cpu usage in a previous update, quite some time back, so I switched back to the older version until there was a new update. I haven't had a problem since, until now. It is very frustrating to be typing and then realize that it is still typing when you aren't any more.

I've also been noticing that adium was using a little too much cpu.
I think it might be a problem with growl and the adium growl plugin. I tried (after trying various cosmetic changes) disabling the growl plugin and stopping growl itself. I think the cpu usage is a little lower, but I havn't had a chance to test adium with multiple conversations (where adium would suck up the most cpu).
Can anyone else with this problem confirm this?
You should also try using less complex message styles, as that helped a little when scrolling through conversations.

I am using transparent mockie (modified) contact list and "Dark Circuitry" message style with a custom background picture.
I figure quartz extreme would take care of transparencies without sacrificing my cpu time.

do any of you have a drastically transparant contact list?
it probably isn't the entire problem, but I think it eats up more CPU in that case.

Using 0.77 now and I had that same problem, 100% CPU usage and it was Finder that was doing most of the damage.

This happened after some file transfers, about 5 files, each about 500 kb in size ... the files all transfered ok and once I quit Finder (not Relaunch) from Activity Monitor and restarted by clicking the dock icon it was up and running ok again. I logged out and back in just to make sure though.

... I don't know if that's related to what's happening here , just thought I'd share.

If performance is a concern, you owe it to yourself to use a standard window contact list with no transparency. Transparency and non-standard lists (including contact bubbles and group bubbles) are EXTREMELY slow.

This becomes especially apparent when there are new messages and Adium is flashing a name on the contact list, causing it to redraw multiple times a second.

Would it be possible to add user controls for the number of times the contact list flashes when there is a new message? Or just limit it to about 5 flashes?
It would help for those of us using transparent contact lists.

Yeah, I believe some prefs concerning flashing will be added in the next version.
