File xfer in MSN haphazard at best?

Is it me, or is file trasfer via MSN Messenger and Adium is a chancy proposition at best?

If I'm on one-on-one conversations, even with several people, and I try to send somebody a file (right-clicking on their name in the chat window), it usually happens even though the start of transmission might take awhile.

However, if I am invited to or if I open a multiuser chat, that's it for file transfer; no matter what I do, I cannot get it to start anymore nor can I receive any.

Is there something I am doing wrong or is it the way it is?
