address book icons not working

instead of using my buddies buddy icons on aim, i've replaced all my contacts icons with different pictures on the address book. went to (advanced + check box "use address book images as contacts icons even if the contact already has an icon") it worked out fine and all the pictures seemed to show up on my contact list, however, when i have a conversation with one of my contacts, it goes back to their original icon. why is this doing so? anyone know how to fix this?
