Be more specific. Does it happen everytime? Could you please actually tell us
what it says? What service are you using? AIM, MSN, ICQ?, and lastly but most importantly
check trac.adiumx.com, see the troubleshooting tips here,
as shown in this sticky

it only says "gaim error"? no error number, no different title, the more information you give, the better it will work.
have you connected before without a problem?
Do you know other people who connect at the same time with msn and do connect without error? (often the fault lies at msn servers being down, blame Microsoft)
Did you try using the "Software Update" option in your apple menu?
go and click on it, it's a wonderfull thing that keeps your apple products free from all bugs! (or most of them).

Jabber.org accounts have had this problem for a while. I think it's the server, not Adium. Jaim.at accounts didn't have this issue.

But he's using MSN..
Try connecting with the official client, so we can verify whether this is an Adium problem or an MSN server one, although I've been able to log on to msn for a while soo probably isn't that.
Try this
http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/Preferences, it sorts many problems in adium, sounds like you could have corrupt preferences so follow those instructions and let us know if you can still connect or not.
Lastly, double check your username and password

, although IIRC that would generate its own kind of specific error message..

Of course. I was just applying prior knowledge to the current problem.
If this didn't happen before (I never got a problem like this) it might be a server problem.
