Tips on managing work vs. personal accounts?

I use Adium with three accounts for work and three for non-work. In each category I have Yahoo, AIM and MSN accounts for maximum interoperability. (Thanks, Adium, for being so flexible!)
Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to manage this kind of multipurpose use of Adium. For instance, I wish I could easily toggle the on- or offline state of all three accounts in a category in a click or two, but I don't see a way to do it.
I've tried to make the dual roles clear to my contacts by using different icons for the work and play accounts.
Any other ideas?

Do you mean changing all the statuses of all accounts at once? Try the Status Menu's top-level statuses.
Oh now I understand. You want to change all the work/personal statuses at once while making the work ones different from the personal ones. I don't know how to do that…

Have you ever used Trillian, by chance?

Unless I'm mistaken, Trillian is only for Windows while Adium is only for Mac. I assume he is using a Mac, as he is using Adium, and therefore cannot use Trillian.

I think Adam Iser means, “riddle, have you EVER used Trillian on Windows before using Adium?”
There are quite a few switchers here.

What's that funky thing that happens....when you press a key at startup....you know......with the dialog box. Could he use that?

Multiple Users? Won't work; he wants both at once.
He *could* launch two different Adiums with different users…

Actually... the way I read it multiple users could be what he wants. If so... hold option at startup, and you get a users dialoge; then you could set up a 'work' and a 'play' user.
Two Adium users or two Mac OS X users?

Thanks for the suggestions.
To those of you who are proposing two users, are you talking aboout an Adium feature or are you talking about logins for two Mac OS X users? In the latter case, no, that won't do what I need -- I need to be able to toggle back and forth between work and play much faster than Mac's so-called "fast user swapping" will support.

That means he can't use Adium's users feature with only one copy of Adium.

(The option-on-startup multiple users is deprecated and will not be around much longer, so I wouldn't recommend getting too comfortable with it

)
I asked about Trillian because that's very similar to how it works and it's a pretty good system for handling accounts / profiles / images / etc

ok..now im freeked

My thoughts exactly when I first discovered this. Devs, why is option-on-startup multiple users being taken out? Will it be replaced with some other kind of user system or is it just seen as unnecessary. I personally don't use it but I find it to be a pretty cool feature

It's going to be replaced with a more obvious and functional way of managing multiple sets of accounts, which is the only real reason anyone would use it.

Oh excellent, and so to the parent poster: Just stick with Adium-it'll sort itself out in the end

Does that mean only multiple sets of accounts, or multiple sets of prefs? Because I use the option-startup thing all the time when testing bugs.
(Of course there's also the method of making a copy of the app and changing the Info.plist key for where that second copy looks for the prefs, but that seems a bit more round-about.
