Let's define what they both are:
Aliases are like UNIX hardlinks. They always point to the same file, regardless of where the file is.
Symbolic links is another word for softlinks. They always point to the same path, resulting in the ability to freely edit and replace the file that's at the path.
I *love* symbolic links, and I have a contextual menu item just for it

Code: Select all
jeremy-hs-powerbook-g4-12:~ jeremyh$ cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/
jeremy-h-powerbook-g4-12:~/Library/Application Support jeremyh$ ln -s ~/users/jeremyh/documents
jeremy-h-powerbook-g4-12:~/Library/Application Support jeremyh$ also.. i was wondering if i can make this specific for only the logs folder?
You left out "Adium 2.0" after the filepath to the new location. The "Adium 2.0" at the end is so UNIX (or whoever) knows what your symbolic link is called, just like if you made an alias of your Adium 2.0 folder, you would call it Adium 2.0.

Not very UNIX-y eh? You typed “Adium 2.0” with the space! You either have to quote the whole path (double " or single ') or put a \ before every space.SuperJeremy3000 wrote:now i have a sheet with an arrow pointing in that says 'documents' and thats in the application support menu. also theres one that says '2.0'
