Is it possible to have an animated .gif as your adium icon? And if so, how do you do it?

I was sure something like this would be in the wiki, but I couldn't find it.
Yes. Drag the image file into the picture well (as opposed to double-clicking on the well and choosing a picture).

Last I tried, it was not possible. In the .80 release notes it says:
(AIM) Added support for setting animating buddy icons (drag an appropriate GIF from the Finder)
However, there's a
trac ticket (try searching there before posting - good stuff) that says:
when i choose my icon, it does not appear to other people as a motion icon but rather a still icon. it only shows the first frame.

Resize it to 48x48 in photoshop or whatever (keeping the animation) and save as a gif. Then drag in as Silverfox said, the issue is if you drag an icon bigger than this or the wrong dimensions Adium resizes it automatically...but in the process loses animation.

Based on what Michael said (empahsis mine):
the issue is if you drag an icon bigger than this or the wrong dimensions Adium resizes it automatically
I would assume it does matter if it is smaller. Sounds like it needs to be exactly 48 x 48.

Are you doing what Silverfox said still? Perhaps you've forgotten about that bit after resizing... So here it is, the long awaited:
How to set an animated buddy icon in Adium on AIM
1. Find your animated image, now open it up in an image editing application such as photoshop. Resize the image
to exactly 48 by 48 OR 50 by 50 pixels. Save you image and quit.
2. On the personal tab of the account settings in Adium's preferences,
drag your image from it's location in the finder to where your current icon is,
do not click on "choose icon..."
That should most definatly work, if not I take it all back it must be a bug, to be dealt with

Not animated it doesn't, MSN doesn't support animated display pictures let alone Adium; but you can go all the way up to 96x96 in terms of resolution.

yay! i did it. The problem was that since there was no canvas color the image was only like 48 * 45 at max (like 1895 said). So, by adding a canvas color, it made it exactly 48 * 48. Thank you everyone for your help!

MSN avatars are in PNG format. That said, a properly applied GIF image with transparency should still be okay.

Make a new layer. Paint Bucket it white. Move the layer to the bottom. Use “Merge Visible” or “Flatten” (the former is better). Presto! An image with a white background! Don't forget to save!
