Try quitting Adium and emptying the contents of the adium cache folder located in

~/Library/Caches/Adium

where "~" represents the name of the MacOS X user account you are having problems with Adium on

Most buddies shouldn't have an icon now, as you deleted all the ones that were saved on the hard disk.

Unfortunately, they should be restoring themselves. Have you searched trac? http://trac.adiumx.com

they are not all restored now, just the service icon displaying, I thought they should all restore by themselves with the actual icon for each user... but lots are not showing now...

It helps if you initiate a conversation with the person.

did you actually have a conversation? I didn't mean just open the message window, i find that if i am not getting an icon, and i start a conversation with them, the icon appears after a few messages and replies.

There are several different ways icons are sent; many versions of protocols on several services (AIM and MSN come to mind) send the buddy icon alongside the first or second message of a conversation.

Ok, got it. Thanks guys, this worked for me (running tiger 10.4)

1. close adium

2. delete blist.xml file AND the contents of the "icons" folder at: Library/app support/Adium 2.0/Users/Default/libgaim

3. restart Adium, problem solved for me.

optional:

4. If this fails, do it again, but emptying the cache folder at: Library/Caches/Adium

good luck!

Same problem, but the fix didn't work.

I used to have the problems with old icons showing whenever I quit Adium and restarted the program. I did the fix above and now I have no icons...and they're not coming back when I talk to people.
Well, I do have the icons of 4 seemingly random people that appeared pretty quickly after I did the fix, one of which is one of the two accounts I use (the other account I use didn't show up).
I tried talking to people to see if it would show up then, but that didn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want my icons back!
Oh yeah, and I'm using OS 10.3, if that's of any help.

I've had that same problem. I might not have it on my Mac mini (and instead just on my Laptop), but I can't be sure as I am on the wrong side of the country to check :)

same thing happened to me after upgrading. specific users icons simply no longer appear. blank space instead of even the aim running man. annoying as all hell

Fixed...sort of.

Well, after a long time, most of the icons are back. No idea what triggered them, some of the people I haven't talked to since before the problem, and their icons showed up right away.
Quite a few of the icons are still missing, so if anyone knows a real fix, I'd still appreciate it.

There isn't a fix really. Buddy icon updating sucks, fact. Other than deleting your cache and waiting for them to come back, there's nothing to be done until the devs fix it.

That's really bad news, registered in the forum looking for a solution for that. First I had the updating icon thingie. Than I installed a beta version and the emoticons in conversations were not showing. I deleted all Adium traces in my iMac and reinstalled 0.82 and now I have this problem of most user avatars not appearing. It's really an annoying bug.

Does Fire show buddy icons on MSN? Or any other messenger besides Mercury Messenger (which is too heavy and slow for my G3)?

Edit/Update: Oh well using that Proteus CPU hog for now
