Unknown disconnection issues

Post by SheWhoDaydreams »

I apologize if this topic has already been covered. I searched for several keywords but didn't find any threads that pertained to my issue.. but I could've overlooked one.

I've had a somewhat unreliable wireless connection over the past few weeks that primarily relates to my DSL provider. My DSL line will periodically drop throughout the day, causing all of my web applications to stop loading and/or cease doing whatever they are doing. These breaks only last a minute or two, however, and sometimes (if I'm not browsing the web) I don't even notice them.

Surprisingly, I do not notice these breaks when I am using Adium. Adium fails to disconnect me from my accounts when a connection is lost. I use one AIM and MSN name simultaneously, and both function as normal -- or seemingly as normal. My buddy list stays up, chat windows open.. but, of course, nothing updates because I've lost my connection. My instant messages send as normal, with no "failure to send" error messages. It's only after a while that I notice whoever I'm talking to isn't responding; suddenly the "ding!" heard upon initial connections sounds, and I'll realise I've been offline, but my buddy list doesn't even disappear as this reconnection takes place.. merely refreshes its content. There is no indication on my end that I have ever been disconnected, but the person I'm talking to at the time will report that I've been gone for five or more minutes, the amount of time it takes my DSL connection to reestablish itself.

This has happened numerous times over the past couple of days alone. I understand that the connection issues are mine, but I'm baffled as to why Adium seemingly runs a normal (albeit one-sided) session during my DSL downtime. I would expect it to automatically disconnect, as with the AIM software or any other internet client. Something similar happened today, only I had my status set as away for an extended period of time; I still appeared to be online while in reality had been signed off for several hours.

Any help/thoughts/insight appreciated. I'm running OS X 10.4.1 with Adium 0.82.

This is normal. It shouldn’t be, but it is. Protocols don’t disconnect in a time like that; you need to SEND something over to the server to disconnect.

Thank you for the info. I've never had experience with this before -- the AIM software would boot me offline if I lost my connection. I wondered if this was a situation unique to Adium, so I appreciate the heads up. :)

I am actually dealing with the same issue as I am stealing wireless until our new network is set-up (god love the fools with open wireless networks so those of us who have moved can still can get online). But, I have a different question. In many cases, my DSL connection will reconnect before Adium has a chance to disconnect (on my side anyway), yet Adium will disconnect anyway. Is this Adium "catching up," or is there something else going on that I'm missing?
