HUGE bug on Adium (MSN related)
HUGE bug on Adium (MSN related)
Using Adium latest version, I get thousands of 'unknown errors of conversation' when I talk to someone using MSN. They of course don't receive my message and it's so frustrating that I can't use Adium at all anymore. I get it 50% of the time now.

One example among others here: http://trac.adiumx.com/ticket/251
Two friends of mine are experiencing the same problem with Adium btw.

Please try the Adium 0.83 beta and report the lines logged to the Adium Debug Window (Adium menu->Debug Window) concurrent with receiving the "unknown conversation error".
Here it is:

I've been having huge problems - IM's that my buddy is sending in a conversation are at one point (very early on) not being received by me, so I wait . . . for a response and eventually ask if he/she is still there - they can see me, and then copy me the IM's I haven't received - we can resume the conversation for a short time until the problem occurs again.
I was using a hotmail account, then tried another one, now am using my regular e-mail address with a .net passport. I've tried on Adium and MSN Messenger - same problem with each address/account and with each chat facility.
I'm not certain if this is an MSN related issue, or if it's got something to do with my settings, or firewall/other related, or what, but it's driving me friggin' ditsy!
I'm new to Mac, am on Tiger, Adium .82, got a DSL connection.
ANY suggestions would be much appreciated! I've obviously read through related posts on this and other sites, but no success yet.
Thanks, all - for the fab software and this great resource!

Yep, I've had this issue appear as well, only a sign in/out would fix it, but not for long. It may just have been the server being dodgy, as I don't think I'd had the problem in the last week or so.Liza wrote:I've been having huge problems - IM's that my buddy is sending in a conversation are at one point (very early on) not being received by me, so I wait . . . for a response and eventually ask if he/she is still there - they can see me, and then copy me the IM's I haven't received - we can resume the conversation for a short time until the problem occurs again.

Solution Found!
Having done the following, based on various pieces of advice (thanks, everyone) I'm now able to chat properly on Adium using MSN and Yahoo accounts, and on MSN Messenger for Mac:
open System Preferences
click on Sharing
click on Firewall
click on New
at Port Name, choose MSN Messenger from the drop down list
click OK
click on New
at Port Name, choose Other from the drop down list
at TCP Port Number(s), type in 1863
click OK
click on New
at Port Name, choose Other from the drop down list
at TCP Port Number(s), type in 80
click OK
Close Sharing window.
In Adium:
go to Preferences
click Accounts
click on your MSN account
click Edit at bottom right
click Options
tick the Connect via HTTP box
click OK
close Preferences window.
Hope this helps someone else!

you are allways more exposed when you open ANY ports and therefore it is never safe... if you have troubles with msn and they could be fixed by opening up these ports, you have to decide whether you are willing to take that risk or not...sydoveton wrote:is it safe to open up these ports, i don't want it to leave me exposed
i, personaly, would take this risk...
