I would go for (2) - definitely not (3); I would like to be prompted, if I have a conversation open, since I usually close before quitting anyway; it would be a pain to always be prompted.

Hmmm… all depends on the programming language; what I have there should be ObjC.

Just trying to add a bit of humor. Your solution is actually fairly elegant if you really think about it, however, I find myself reluctant to deviate from "apple-q".
