Is there any reason that I can't seem to be able to change the color of the font for group names on my contact list?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm fairly sure I'm doing the right thing...

Adium -> Preferences... -> Appearance -> Customize... (List Layout) -> Groups -> Set Font... -> Text Color

If you're using the latest version of Adium you can change group font color by:

Adium -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Customize Color Theme -> Groups -> Text Color
