Prefences-->Appearance-->Fit vertically
I think that's what you're talking about.

No, he wants a max length. So, uncheck fit vertically, and then you should be able to drag it to whatever size you want.

The reason max width is there is to accommodate long display names and the such and truncate them as necessary. This is not a problem in the realm of height.

The real bug, then, is that the automatic resizing doesn't take the dock into consideration.
I don't know if this actually happens when the list extends downwards that long (I've recently removed 100+ buddies) but it happens when unhiding offline contacts.

Only if your dock is at the edge. Apple in her infinite wisdom doesn't let us know how far the dock extends... and most users do not have a dock to the edges, so would be upset with an automatically sized list which 'randomly' doesn't extend to the bottom of the screen, staying above the dock height instead.

I don't know about that. I would think that users could accept the contact list stopping at the Dock's height (even if their Dock isn't fully extended), especially if the alternative is the Dock overlapping the bottom of a window, which should never happen IMO. And don't most people have their Dock at full length? (I wouldn't know; my Dock is on the left.)
edit: wow, I must've missed your "most users don't have their Docks to the edges" statement, Evan. Hrm.
