I'm thinking of starting a script to check message spelling and replace mistakes like teh and btu and so on. I don't suppose anyone could help me with what I have to do to make this compatible with Adium? This means checking what's in the current message window and doing a find/replace action.

did you check the built-in spelling checker?
left-click (press ctrl) and click on a word. Choose spelling from the menu, and use "check spelling while tiping". You will get a red line under every wrongly spelled word.
In that menu you can also change the language.

If you intend to make a plugin, I can't help you.
